Welcome to Denby Grange School

Welcome from the Head Teacher

Welcome to Denby Grange registered independent school. Based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, the school provides both day and residential placements and an alternative education programme for pupils who require more specialised interventions than can be provided in a mainstream school.

The school is set in a pleasant, rural location which creates a nurturing environment.

Aims

We aim to develop every pupil’s self-respect, self-confidence and self-reliance with a sense of loyalty and honesty.

What sets us apart from other schools

Pupils with S.E.M.H. needs are not “naughty children” but are pupils who struggle to fit within the conventional structures of school. Their behaviour has often led to them being rejected at school and isolated from their peer group, yet they are often the children who need to be listened to the most carefully.

We therefore ensure that a tailored programme of education is provided to every pupil at the school.

Pupils

The philosophy of Denby Grange School reflects the view that the pupils are often confused and angry and their behaviours are a form of self-protection. Many of the children who come to Denby Grange School experience social, emotional, or mental health problems and may have been diagnosed with conditions such as ADHD, Dyslexia/Dyspraxia and Moderate Learning Difficulties.

Pupils are between the ages of 11-18 years old.

Areas of expertise

We currently offer the opportunity for all pupils who are working at that level to achieve nationally recognised accreditation in English, Maths, Science, Personal and Social Development, PHSE, Design Technology, Food Technology. This runs alongside our own internal accreditation for academic progress and achievement.

In order to meet the diverse needs of the children at Denby Grange School we ensure that the staff to pupil ratio is always very high. The school is currently registered for 50 pupils and at present there is a Headteacher, Associate Headteacher, School Administrator, a further 12 full time teaching members and 20 teaching assistants.

Documentation

Denby Grange School’s First Aid Policy is available to parents on request or via the school office.

"You didn’t give up on him ever, even we thought there were times when he didn’t deserve the chances you gave him, but thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Can’t believe he has a college place and qualifications to go with it. You are all amazing." Parent
